MARS BARS

Mars Bars took place in the Boston Edison District of Detroit and was one part of a series of events that reactivated a basement bar that was once run by a person named Eddie. Remnants from this bar included (cheeky, sexist) imagery that resembled the drawing style and chauvinistic humor from the 1960's or 70's, hinting that this was potentially a hangout for married men or possibly a swingers club. Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, written by John Grey in 1992, announces the impossibility for women and men to understand each other, that they are entirely different creatures from entirely different planets. Mars Bars plays with this ridiculous notion on an aesthetic level, utilizing the materials and art already around to create a Mars like environment. Neon signage by George Vidas, abandoned concrete pieces found around Detroit, paper mache mars landscape and videos of the Mars and Venus analemma by Ashley Cook, sets by Wet Dog, Circument, Cruce and Gorgeous Portis, drinks by Nolan Simon...
